Interaction Information:

Comment Both GLUT4 and GLUT8 are present in the developing mouse brain, with highest concentrations noted during the suckling phase. Although GLUT4 and GLUT8 immunoreactivity was found in many structures, most striking was the presence of GLUT8 in neurons of the substantia nigra and of great biological significance was the presence of both GLUT4 and GLUT8 in the hippocampus and hypothalamic paraventricular and arcuate nuclei. Thus, in addition to mediating insulin's effect on food intake, GLUT4 and GLUT8 may translate the effect of insulin, insulin-like substances, or insulin-like growth factors in regulating cognition and memory, emotional behavior, motor activity and seizures. GLUT8 may be the somatodendritic glucose transporter isoform in conjunction with the axonal GLUT3 isoform that mediates glucose transport necessary for neuronal function.
