Comment The effects of increasing HIF-1alpha via iron chelation with deferoxamine (DFO) upon cultured human islets was examined and compared with the effects of hypoxia. DFO caused dose-dependent increases in HNF4A, GLUT1, GLUT2, AKT2, and IRS2 mRNAs. In contrast, hypoxia increased GLUT1 but not GLUT2.
