Comment Because expression levels of genes involved in the function of mitochondria decreased, the expression of genes known to be involved in mitochondrial biogenesis was examined. Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma coactivator-1 (PGC1) alpha and PGC1beta mRNA were decreased by -20% and -25%, respectively. Mitochondrial transcription factor A (TFAM), a key activator of mitochondrial transcription and its genome replication, was not significantly changed, nor was nuclear respiratory factor 1 (NRF1).
