Comment Several studies have demonstrated that treatments aimed at improving insulin resistance in lean and obese PCOS women (e.g. weight loss, metformin, D-chiro-inositol and peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPARgamma) agonists) reduce androgen levels and improve the exaggerated androgenic response to LH or ACTH stimulation tests. Taken together, these studies suggest that the androgenic hyper-responsiveness that characterizes women with PCOS is probably due to factors controlled by insulin sensitization rather than LH, ACTH or ovarian steroids per se.
